HOMEGROWN hero Matthew Bates has revealed his pride at being asked to captain his boyhood idols.

The Stockton stopper was installed as stand-in skipper for the snowbound 2-2 Riverside draw with Hull City.

Bates, 23, has looked commanding since slotting back into his natural position in central defence and his form has earned him the accolade of the armband.

"It was a nice moment to be told I was going to be captain," he beamed.

"Boro is the club I always supported as a kid, the club my friends and my family all support, and so I was very proud.

"It is a great honour, I know that. And it is nice to know that since he has been here the gaffer has seen something in me that makes him think I can be a good captain for this club.
