IF you haven't had a chance to don your pinny and make your own, now's the time to stock up on Christmas cakes and puds for the festive table.

Traditional fruit-laden sweet treats are an integral part of the festivities - as well as being the ultimate winterwarming comfort food.

However you enjoy yours, with a glass of Port to hand, a warming sherry, or refreshing cup of tea, we have a few choices to tickle your fancy. This year we've included selections from North East producers including Alnwick-based Proof of the Pudding, Greggs, and Jenkins & Hustwit from Durham, as well as Harrogate-based Bettys and a few national big-hitters.

We've also included suggestions for alternative desserts for those who aren't big fans of Christmas puds and cakes. All marks are out of five.

CHRISTMAS PUDDINGS Alnwick Rum Christmas Pudding, pounds 8.50 for 450g, The Proof of the Pudding, Heckley High House, Alnwick, tel: 01665 602505. www.theproofo fthepudding.co .uk Very popular with all our testers, this quality pud had a light texture, was moist and not too dark. Made to a family recipe, it is choc-a-block with dried fruits which are soaked overnight in Alnwick Rum. In the mix are also fresh apples, oranges, lemons and carrots. We could taste the booze, although one tester said: "A little more alcohol wouldn't go amiss." A good all-rounder.

Victorian Christmas Pudding, from pounds 2.99 for 227g, pounds 7.90 for 1kg pud from website, Jenkins & Hustwit, Farmhouse Fruit Cakes, Bishop Auckland. Tel: 01388 605005. www.jenkinsand hustwit.co m Tantalising spicy aromas from this one, a rich pudding with a homemade taste to it. Made, baked and wrapped by hand, it is from a Victorian family recipe and mixed with brandy. Made with vegetable suet so suitable for vegetarians. Nice and spicy, testers thought this had a texture like traditional spotted dick and was light and not too heavy.
