BOXING: Mooloolaba's Brett W Smith has defied a suspected broken hand to retain his Australian lightweight title in emphatic fashion at the Cronulla Leagues Club.

Smith, who is trained by Brendan Cotter and Darren Obah, beat Sydney's Brendan Batty comprehensively on Friday night in the 10-round bout.

Two of the judges ruled in favour of Smith by 11 points and the other awarded him 10 more points than his opponent.

Obah said it was an atrocity that the fight was allowed to continue as long as it did.
