For those looking to hit the road this holiday period Co particularly those planning to cover large distances Co going out with a car that has been fully serviced and checked for faults is the best way to avoid the embarrassment of breaking down or the heartache of being involved in an accident.

Ipswich mechanic Andrew McClure said one of the most important safety features of a car, the tyres, was also one of the most overlooked by Ipswich motorists.

"We regularly get people coming in with tyres that are so worn that they have the steel belts hanging out of them," he said.

"We see some cars that we wouldn't be game to drive around the block.

"Some of these cars aren't even serviced once a year. It might be more like once every five years and they end up with a list of problems that is a page long."

While regular professional servicing is recommended, those who feel they can maintain their vehicles themselves should regularly check tyres, oil, water and belts. …
