Olympian to Open New Hockey Field

GYMPIE'S new half million dollar hockey surface is already paying dividends before even being finished.

Gympie Hockey president Ian Wenzel said the club was set to host the Queensland Under 13 Girls State Championships in June/July because of the new surface.

"That's over 500 players and around 300 parents coming to Gympie," he said.

Volunteers are still working hard on the facility, erecting new fencing around the synthetic field, and Wenzel said there were still a lot of volunteers needed to finish the project by the start of the hockey season next year.

He said the field was now laid and the recent rain had done a good job of bedding down the sand on the state-of-the-art surface.

"The turf layers have to return to finish grooming the field and then it should be right to go," Wenzel said.

Before that happens, though, help is needed to finish fencing, retaining walls and build new dugouts on the western side of the field. …
