Kiosks Do It Tough as Rain Washes Summer Trade Away

SMALL shops and kiosks that service the beachgoing crowd are facing a bleak future as the wet weather keeps their customers away.

Ron Miller, who runs the kiosk at Innes Park, said yesterday almost a whole year of rain had left his business in bad shape.

"At the beginning of this year, from the day after Boxing Day to the end of March, except on Australia Day, it rained every day," he said.

"That's three months of rain during our peak trading period."

Mr Miller said on Monday, which featured a day of sunshine until a thunderstorm came by in the afternoon, between 3pm and 6.30pm his kiosk took $35.

He said yesterday was not too bad, and he was selling a lot of drinks due to the hot weather.

But Mr Miller said the long spell of wet weather had had an impact on retailers, farmers and the building industry. …
