SHE spent her life caring for others and working with vulnerable people in the community.

At the age of 83, Mary Sunderland Coard died peacefully in hospital on November 9 after suffering a short illness.

The great-grandmotherof-three spent her life looking after other people and became a well-respected and much-loved member of her community in Ponteland.

Mary was brought up in the small village of Strathaven, near Glasgow, in Scotland. She grew up knowing she wanted to become a nurse and started her training during the Second World War at the Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow. She then moved to London and studied for three years at King's College Hospital, where she met her husband of 60 years, Dick.

The couple had two sons and a daughter and in 1965 the family moved to the North East.

During the war Mary played a huge role in the Women's Royal Voluntary Service. When she moved to the North East she built up the strength of the WRVS Ponteland local office to over 100. …
