Students Given the All-Clear to Return to School after Fire

SCHOOL will resume for North Mackay Primary School students today, just two days after a major fire destroyed a teaching block containing Year 1 classrooms.

Parents were initially encouraged to keep their children at home until the area was given an Cyall clear' from a health and safety perspective, Department of Education and Training CQ regional director Wayne Butler said.

Stays and supports for the roof and sides of the affected building Co Block B Co were significantly damaged in the fire and there was also some concern the building could house asbestos containing material.

C[pounds sterling]The decision to reopen follows specialist advice from structural engineers, environmental experts and QBuild,C[yen] Mr Butler said.

C[pounds sterling]It was made with the safety of the school's 363 students and 55 staff as the highest priority.
