GREEN thinking and green actions are seemingly still poles apart.

While environmental factors are at the forefront of many new car buyers' minds, research shows many of us fail at the petrol pump.

Car insurer AAMI undertook a nation-wide survey which revealed that while more than half were thinking about environmental impact at purchase, only 32% were choosing ethanol blends or biofuels at the bowser.

The primary reason was fear it would damage their car.

Holden may hold the key to changing those attitudes.

The latest Commodore update is the greenest in history, trumpeting fuel lower consumption and emissions.

While not in Toyota Prius territory, the gains have earned four stars on the Federal Government's green car guide. That trumps other big sellers Mazda3, Toyota Corolla and Ford Falcon (all three and a half).

Pivotal to the four-star treatment is the Commodore's ability to run on E85 unleaded a 85% ethanol and 15% petrol. …
