THE Gladstone region has plenty of heroes and now is the time to come forward and let them be known.

Nominations for our community, cultural and sporting champions are still being taken following Gladstone Regional Council's extension of the 2011 Australia Day Awards nomination process.

Poor entry numbers forced council to extend its original December 6 deadline to the new date of Wednesday to ensure more of the region's worthy recipients are in with a chance of claiming an award.

The awards recognise Gladstone region individuals who have made significant contributions to the community or who have excelled in the sporting or cultural arenas.

Gladstone Regional Council Community Service chairwoman Maxine Brushe said there were many people in the local community whose efforts and achievements were deserved of being recognised.

Cr Brushe said council would welcome nominations in all of the eight award categories. …
