Team Mentality; Allora Swim Club Takes on Queensland

IT means an early start and some enroute nerves but nothing will distract from the fact today Allora Swim Club have 33 swimmers on the blocks for the 2010 McDonald's Queensland Championships.

It is the largest team the club has ever taken to the Brisbane Aquatic Centre event.

And while club vice-president Angela Van der Poel was expecting some impressive performances, she said the focus was also on gaining experience.

C[pounds sterling]For many of our younger swimmers it will be their first experience on the blocks at Chandler,C[yen] Van der Poel said.

C[pounds sterling]Most are competing in relay teams representing our club, so they are with their mates.

C[pounds sterling]And that is a lovely way to be initiated into swimming at state level.

C[pounds sterling]It is also good exposure for them; if they do make a regional team later and have to compete in Brisbane, it is not as daunting.C[yen]

But she explained there were also Allora competitors working hard to make national qualifying times at the meet to earn a spot in the Australian championships early next year. …
