Students on Tyneside Praised for Peaceful Protest

"WE won't stop the fight". That was the determined message Tyneside students sent to politicians as they protested against the rise in tuition fees.

Hundreds of students turned out for their biggest mass rally yet in Newcastle yesterday, which blocked the main routes into the city centre and brought traffic to a standstill.

Protesters from universities, colleges and schools marched from Grey's Monument to Swan House roundabout, halting cars and buses.

The march, which was also attended by lecturers and parents, continued along Northumberland Street, drawing the attention of busy shoppers. Adam Robertson, 19, who is studying history at Durham University, took part in the rally.

He said: "I think the Government thought the students would get bored before now, but the turnout to the protests shows the strength of feeling."

Rachel Atkinson, 22, of Chester-le-Street, County Durham, is studying a postgraduate course at Newcastle University. She said: "The fees will put off people from working class backgrounds from applying to university and this is greatly unfair. …
