Teenager's Cliff Rescue May Come at a Cost

AN ADVENTURE holiday lived up to its name at the weekend when a Hervey Bay teenager defied death after falling from a cliff.

The 15-year-old was climbing around caves when he fell five metres at Bat Cleft, Mt Etna, near Rockhampton.

It took emergency service crews more than five hours to complete their rescue operation.

They first arrived at the scene about 11.30am where they were faced with a two-kilometre walk.

They then crawled through the narrow entrance on their hands and knees before climbing down a two-and-a-half-metre drop.

When they eventually got to the teenager he was lying on the ground but conscious.

He had head wounds and complained of pain in his neck and hip but, according to paramedics, was not seriously injured.

He has since been released from Rockhampton Hospital.

Yesterday operations manager for Queensland Parks and Wildlife in Rockhampton, Peter Moore, said the trip could cost the climbers $8000 each. …
