Anglers Split on Snapper Closure

THE announcement of a statewide six-week interim closure to help reduce pressure on snapper stocks is dividing the recreational fishing community.

Fisheries minister Tim Mulherin said the closure was an interim measure until new fishing rules could be finalised to ensure the take of snapper was sustainable.

The closure, which includes pearl perch and teraglin, will take effect from February 15 to March 31 next year.

Keen angler and Bundaberg Sports Fishing Association member Darryl Lindemann said he felt the closure was justified if it would make sure snapper stocks were protected.

"The six weeks is so the fish can spawn and reproduce," he said.

"I don't have a problem as long as the facts behind it are correct."

Mr Lindemann pointed out that other fish, such as barramundi, also had the protection of a closed season.

He said he would not object if a licence to catch snapper was another measure put in place. …
