ALAN PARDEW has thrown the gauntlet down to his Newcastle United young guns with a simple message: "Impress me."

The Toon boss is expected to watch the second string take on Manchester United at Altrincham's Moss Lane tomorrow evening.

That will give him the chance to run the rule over several of the Magpies' youngsters who hope to follow in the footsteps of Tim Krul, Andy Carroll and Nile Ranger, who have all come through the ranks to the first-team stage.

And with stars such as Geordie hot-shot Phil Airey, neat and tidy Irish defender Stevie Folan and attacking talent like Haris Vuckic and Bradden Inman eager to shine, Pardew admits he is keen to see what they have to offer.

He told the Chronicle: "It is for me to assess when I think they will be ready.

"I have not had too much of a chance to see them yet.

"We have good players here already, and they are good players that the youngsters have to get past. …
