PAUL Jackson was flabbergasted last night when told he and wife Lorna had won the Champion of Champions award in this year's Fraser Coast Light Up Our City competition.

"Unreal!" he exclaimed.

The couple had been runner-up in the overall category for the past two years so to win the top prize was a case of athird time luckiera.

Paul and Lorna have been decorating their home in Tulipwood Drive, Maryborough, for the past six years and love visitors dropping by to see their display, particularly as their adult children and grandchildren live some distance away.

"We've had quite a few visitors already although it was bit quieter last night because of the rain," Paul said.

"Last year we didn't get any rain but this year it's been quite wet."

The early start to this year's rain season didn't stop the couple from getting their home ready in time for Christmas a they had a head start before it set in, getting the initial work under way in July.

Meanwhile, Hervey Bay's winner of the Most Outstanding Residence and Most Outstanding Nativity for 2009, Glen and Lisa Salter of Hayman Court, Kawungan, have won this year's runner-up Champion of Champions. Their home is also included in the street award.

"It's absolutely fantastic," Glen said.

"More than 100 hours on nights and weekends have gone into setting up. It's a lot of work but it creates a real Christmas atmosphere that's very enjoyable. It's a fantastic neighbourhood to be living in."

Glen said visiting Hervey Bay's Christmas Street had become a tradition for many people.

"There'll be thousands of people here on Christmas Eve."

Weather permitting, photos of winning displays from Maryborough will appear on Monday.
