THE Con/Dem Government is preaching the mantra of must cut costs and we must be leaner within the public sector, yet the proposed police reform bill to give us a directly elected police commissioner has an estimated cost of pounds 100m -estimated to be the equivalent of 600 police officers.

As a Liberal, I am profoundly disturbed by proposals to put power in the hands of one person -unhealthy for accountability and centralist in its approach.

Its top down power structure should sit quite comfortable with the Conservative part of the coalition, but it would be shocking if these proposals merit the support and find favour with the Liberals within the Lib Dems.

We don't need an American-style centralised police ethos in this country. It creates the illusion of giving choice but, in reality, it removes local control and takes away any form of link between community and the local police.
