When VAT returned to 17.5 per cent in January, the 2p stayed. Ministers should feel free to raise fuel prices but they should at least remove the 2p.

Waitrose deserves its reputation for high-quality products. The problem is their inflated charges for items identical to those on sale at other stores such as chocolate bars and branded fruit juice: a far cry surely from the John Lewis boast to equal any competitor's price.
