TIRED of playing second fiddle, Tugun plumber Hugh Dougherty manned-up for his maiden first place victory in round three of the Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Ironman Series at Coolum last Sunday.

A five-time series runner-up and second in last year's world championships, Dougherty's rivals have long feared the man chasing them down and knew it was only a matter of time until he broke through for top honours.

However, it came as somewhat of a relief for the 27-year-old who was thrilled to not only win, but leapfrog his more fancied opponents into top spot on the ratings leaderboard.

"It's such a good feeling to finally have a win," he said. "I've had a lot of seconds and there's a certain amount of relief now that I've taken my first victory."

Dougherty finished 25 seconds ahead of four-time Coolangatta Gold winner Caine Eckstein, with Corey Jones and round one winner Shannon Eckstein in third and fourth. …
