Beware of Bills before Buying Big

WITH mobile phones topping the list of almost every child's wish list this Christmas, parents are being warned to explore all the options before letting their kids unwrap a potential financial disaster.

Australian Mobile Telecommunications Associations spokesperson Randal Markey said while the decision of whether a phone was an appropriate gift came down to personal circumstances and parents should be careful before signing up to a plan.

"Mobile phones are often the first item kids get that have financial implications," Mr Markey said.

"It's their first major dealing with money."

Mr Markey suggested parents buy their kids prepaid phones rather than signing up to a plan.

"The prepaid option is really a fantastic option for youngsters because it gives them a limit," he said.

"They just can't keep spending and then surprise their parents when the bill arrives."

Mr Markey said the prepaid option also helped children and teens learn about budgeting. …
