A Racy Affair for the Newlyweds

PEOPLE spend their honeymoon in many weird and wonderful ways and it seems some athletes fall into that category.

After secretly tying the knot in Gretna Green, Lee and Tracy Millmore set off for a break in sunny Barbados - which in normal circumstances would be a nice way to start your life together. However, while the marriage arrangements were concealed from friends and family, the trip to the Caribbean was a wellthought- out affair.

Lee, a member of Birtley AC, and Tracy, who runs for Chesterle-Street as well as being secondclaim for Birtley, thought it would be a good idea to fit in a series of races while holidaying on the romantic island.

Tracy said: "I remember when I was a teenager going to Barbados on holiday with my parents in 1997 and they both took in a race then, so Lee and I discussed the possibility of going there for our honeymoon.

"Nowadays, the event has grown into a huge sporting occasion with competitors having the choice of racing from one mile to a marathon, all spread over one weekend.

"There were a number of categories you could enter and Lee and I decided to run the mile race, the 5k and the 10k.

"The mile was run at midnight on the Friday, then we recovered from that before setting off for Bridgetown for the 10k which started at 4.30pm.

"Despite being a bit tired from our efforts, we then had to get our heads round the idea of lining up in the final 5k which was at 5.15am on the Sunday morning when the temperature would be really hot.

"The whole experience was wonderful and we had a super time.

"I was pleased to be first woman home in the mile (5min 48sec) and 5k (19:37) and was fifth in the 10k (38:15) which was not surprising because, while there was no prize money for the mile and 5k, the 10k had a substantial prize list so consequently the race attracted a number of African runners who went on to scoop the main awards. …
