Local People Test Positive for Pyroluria

AN ALMOST unknown medical condition brought to the attention of Daily Examiner readers last month has resulted in a number of people coming forward for testing.

Iluka doctor David Richards contacted The Daily Examiner recently in an effort to help local people who may be suffering from a condition called pyroluria.

The condition is said to affect about 10 per cent of the population and includes symptoms such as needing strong caffeine fixes from coffee and energy drinks, trouble getting started in the morning and several other things.

Dr Richards said that since the article was published, he had been kept busy talking to people interested in being tested for the condition and wanting information about pyroluria to show their own doctor.

"The purpose of the article on pyroluria was to educate people about a condition that I didn't know about until recently and my colleagues didn't know about either," he said. …
