WHAT would you do if you were up to your neck in water at Baldwin Swamp and the boots of your waders became stuck in the mud?

Maureen Schmitt found herself in that predicament several years ago.

"It was quite frightening actually. Janet Tallon and I had rigged up a raft and were filling it with water weed we were dragging from the swamp," Maureen said.

"When my waders got stuck, Janet had to literally tow me out behind the raft."

Maureen's love of nature began on a farm near Dorrigo NSW.

"Mum said that when I was two-years-old I would put on my gum boots and disappear into the fog and go visit the cows and she was worried I Cyd get lost."

It was a worry that her mother must have had for quite some years Co the family moved to Bundaberg, and after schooling at Central State School and Bundaberg High, Maureen travelled through South and North America, Europe, Africa and Asia for a couple of years.

On her return to Australia, Maureen studied Applied Science at Canberra University, travelled some more, then lived in Canada for three years before coming home. …
