SNOW may still be affecting our area - but bookies will not be paying out on a white Christmas.

As the prolonged cold snap continues, the wintry weather is still causing problems on some of the region's roads.

A number of drivers needed rescuing as a snap blizzard hit the Whitby area on Christmas Eve.

Police and Whitby Coastguard Rescue Team were called to help motorists stuck on steep routes including Blue Bank, near Sleights, and Lythe Bank, near Sandsend.

The A169 between Sleights and Lockton, across Fylingdales Moors, was also closed for a spell.

On Christmas Day itself, Teesside escaped fresh snow - despite Ladbrokes giving Middlesbrough the shortest odds in England for a white Christmas.

The odds of 10/11 were on a par with Scotland, and the bookmaker said it was the shortest price offered for a white Christmas in the area since the 1980s.

But the Met Office today confirmed that Teesside had not seen a white Christmas this year. …
