Water Damage Affects Roads

POLICE are urging Gladstone locals to drive with extreme caution as receding floodwaters reveal underlying damage to roadways.

Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson said the hazards posed to drivers from the inundation the state has received has not lessened with the receding of floodwaters.

"The sheer volume of water fallen on our roads has caused damage to many road surfaces and I urge everyone to travel with extreme caution.

"With so many roads having been closed it can be expected that many of these will have sustained varying degrees of damage."

Police are urging motorists keen to resume their journeys to remain patient and for drivers to remain alert and vigilant for unforeseen hazards.

"It would be prudent travelling to limit night driving on roads previously affected by flooding as potholes and damaged road surfaces may be harder to detect and avoid at night.

"Many roads and bridges need to be inspected, with numerous repairs required," Commissioner Atkinson said. …
