THE McIntosh's are trying to stay upbeat about their ordeal, yesterday Alex and Candace joked that they needed something fun to do for New Year's Eve to try and forget some of the drama from the last week.

They were shocked when a mine shaft collapsed in the backyard of Mr McIntosh's mother's house early Wednesday morning.

After realising what he saw, Mr McIntosh grabbed his family, their passports and fled the house.

Then they called triple-zero from the safety of the top of the Alexander Place cul-de-sac and a police officer met them a short time later.

Mr McIntosh said it was hard to describe what had happened and the officer went to have a look.

They both walked into the backyard of the home, but as Mr McIntosh slowed the officer started walking towards the hole.

aHe was tapping his flashlight trying to get it to work and walking towards the hole and I said you'd better stop.a

Promptly the officer's torch worked and he realised one step ahead of him the ground was breaking away and falling into the collapsed mine shaft. …
