WHILE most of us make selfish New Year resolutions to drink less or exercise more, Gael Porter resolved to save 12 lives this year.

The Coolum 55-year-old had wanted to become a blood donor for years and she finally made the leap yesterday at the Sunshine Coast's mobile donor van.

aMy daughter (aged 23) has been giving blood for a while and she talked me into it,a Ms Porter said.

aIt's just something I've always wanted to do and I've always put it off but it's a new year and I had a resolution to just do it.

aI have already made my appointment to go back in 12 weeks time.

aYou come out feeling pretty special for doing it.a

Ms Porter said she would now endeavour to get the whole family donating with plans to work on her husband.

Sunshine Coast Red Cross Blood Service Community Relations Officer Daniel Rowling said the service had a shortage of types A and O, especially the universal type Oa.

aI guess New Year resolutions are commonly people wanting to improve themselves but this year we're hoping they think about other people a how they can save three people's lives and make a difference to three families with one blood donation,a he said. …
