Wyman Family Set to Sell Gatton Store; End of an Era for Clothing Business That Dates Back to 1883

THE family name Wyman is known throughout the Lockyer Valley for creating history and bringing progress to the region for more than a century.

But a decision by Peter Wyman to sell the Wymans Mensland department store in Gatton will mark the end of an era for a business chain that has been operating since 1883.

Wymans' department store first opened in Laidley in 1883 by family patriarch George Wyman, before it passed on to his son Charles in 1911 after George died.

A few decades later, the family expanded the successful business and opened up another store, this time in Gatton's main street.

Established in 1958, the Gatton store has changed slightly over time to accommodate for changing demographics.

But current owner and fifth generation Wyman, Peter, said it always maintained the same principles.
