With "Hays' headlines" taking a one-week sabbatical, we had to come up with some other top sports stories that just missed the paper this week. Here are some comments from sports figures that we have yet to substantiate whether it's fact or fiction:

- Washington Redskins quarterback Rex Grossman, on his return to Jacksonville this week as starting quarterback of the Redskins: "I'll show the people in Jacksonville how a real Florida Gators quarterback completes passes in the NFL."

- Fired Maryland football coach Ralph Friedgen: "I lose more weight than David Lamm and they still fire me. What's a coach to do?"

- Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre to the team doctor as he lay on the field Sunday after suffering a head injury: "I don't know what happened, doc. I last thing I remember was hitting send on my cell phone to Jen and then all hell broke loose."

- Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban on his proposed college football playoff proposal: "You have to think outside the box and make it something the players want to do. That's why I'm proposing a $1,000 stipend to all starters and $500 to anyone who plays in the national championship game."

- FSU coach Jimbo Fisher, to new Florida coach Will Muschamp regarding the beach house they co-own in Daytona Beach: "I wanted to give Will a welcoming gift on his being named head coach at Florida so I've agreed to let him have use of the house in December and January each year while I'm busy preparing for a BCS bowl game."

- Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning on the Colts' win over the Jaguars on Sunday: "I'm not sure where all that talk was coming from about the Jaguars winning the AFC South. Don't they know we OWN this division and will own it until I retire."

So Jacksonville will finally host a playoff game in January. …
