Workers Behind; Salvation Army and St Vincent De Paul Keep the Clean-Up Rolling

IT takes a certain kind of person to give up their days for free to make sure others are taken care of Co and Bundaberg is lucky to have hundreds of these people.

Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul volunteers have been working tirelessly to feed our emergency service workers and provide shelter, comfort and resources to those forced to flee their homes.

Salvation Army Captain Phil Sharp said his group had been working non-stop since last Tuesday.

C[pounds sterling]We have been feeding the evacuees and emergency services and the Red Cross,C[yen] Mr Sharp said.

C[pounds sterling]We've even been sending meals out into the field and SES headquarters so they don't need to come back to get something to eat.C[yen]

Mr Sharp estimated the volunteer-run group had provided 5000 meals and 8000 snacks to emergency services and evacuees in the past eight days.

As well as providing food, the Salvation Army and Bundaberg Sunrise Rotary have been collecting and distributing donations of clothes, furniture, crockery, cutlery and other household items to families in need.

C[pounds sterling]We've had numerous volunteers who have walked in off the street and asked what they can do to help,C[yen] Mr Sharp said.

C[pounds sterling]It's going surprisingly well.

C[pounds sterling]People are getting tired, but holding up under the strain.C[yen]

About 50 Salvation Army volunteers are based around the region working to do their part and Mr Sharp said the extensive efforts were expected to wrap up tomorrow, when a specially equipped truck on loan, complete with kitchen, needs to be sent to help in Theodore.

C[pounds sterling]I tear up at the involvement of our people and the strength they have to continue,C[yen] Mr Sharp said.
