LEON BEST insists he will score goals for Newcastle United - providing he is given the opportunities from manager Alan Pardew.

That chance could come tonight against West Ham United at St James' Park. Best knows competition is tough at St James' Park with England striker Andy Carroll, Shola Ameobi, Peter Lovenkrands and Nile Ranger all fighting for places in the frontline.

Nevertheless, Pardew has assured Best he will have his chance in the next few games.

Best was part of the same youth team at Southampton as England ace Theo Walcott and Tottenham star Gareth Bale and was recommended to former Newcastle boss Chris Hughton by Arsenal legend Liam Brady.

Former AC Milan, Inter Milan and Bayern Munich boss Giovanni Trapattoni, currently in charge of the Ireland national team, also believes Best has what it takes to succeed at the top.

Ahead of the clash with the Hammers, Best is desperate to get that first competitive goal in black and white.

He told the Chronicle: "The last time I played at St James' Park, I scored against PSV in a friendly, so you could say I am on a roll!

"It feels like a long time ago though.

"When I speak to my friends back home they always ask when am I playing again. And when am I going to start scoring again.

"It has been frustrating for me, because I do believe if I go on a good run of playing games, the goals will come too, I feel I can score a lot of goals.

"It is hard when you have had injuries and when there is so much competition and you are in and out to get on that run.

"You are never 100% match fit when you are in that position and it is the match fitness you need.

"It is just a matter of getting that first little goal to ignite your confidence.

"I did get that goal in PSV and then the injury crept in, but that is life isn't it? …
