The return to school can trigger a range of emotions in both parents and children, with 23% of calls to Parentline Plus being from parents and carers anxious about their child's schooling.

Add to this the dark nights, which can lead to many children being glued to their computers, parents can have a challenge on their hands.

To help get families through the winter, national parenting charity Parentline Plus is offering some tried and tested tips.

A spokeswoman for the North East charity said: "Children benefit from encouragement and reassurance from their parents about going back to school and from having any anxieties they do have listened to and taken seriously.

"Children achieve well when their family and friends take an interest in their school and school work. It helps the child feel supported as well as helping to reinforce what is being learnt.

"The dark nights can mean that some children end up spending too much time on the computer because they can't play out and there are ways of tackling this, including agreeing how much time your child can spend on the computer each day."

Top tips for parents by parents: Establish a routine for your children paying particular attention to bedtime.

It can be difficult to get children to bed if they are buzzing from too much TV, computer or mobile phone use. Choose a time when all of these are turned off.

Encourage children to go to bed with a book and the opportunity for a goodnight chat with you. Think about what your children are eating.

Introduce some wholesome meals and snacks. Children are more able to concentrate at school if they have a healthy diet. …
