REMEMBER the days when as kids we would collect aluminium cans and soft drink bottles by the carload, so they could be swapped for a paltry amount of money that helped supplement pocket money and help to buy a few extra football cards?

Today, recycling has become somewhat more sophisticated in the form of high-tech reverse vending machines and, if Ballina MP Don Page gets his way, these machines will soon appear on the North Coast.

aAs the name suggests, a reverse vending machine does not give you a drink in return for money,a he said.

aRather, it accepts empty plastic bottles and soft drink cans and will reward the consumer for going to the trouble of recycling.a

The rewards would take the form of discount vouchers or chances to win a ticket to the movies.

While the vending machines are commonplace in Europe, parts of Asia and North America, Mr Page wants to see them become the norm here in Australia. …
