A NEW study has shown Queenslanders are the laziest in the country when it comes to exercise.

Figures just out from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show only 62% of Queenslanders participate in sport or recreational activities, and we are less likely to exercise than people who live in every other state and territory.

And we're getting lazier.

Between 2005 and 2010, the number of people from the Sunshine State who engage in physical exercise dropped 5%.

A Bundaberg cardiologist believes Queensland's failure to adopt daylight saving is partially to blame for the city's high obesity levels.

Dr Hermann Wittmer, of the Friendly Society Private Hospital, said a lack of evening light was not conducive to exercise.
