Brisbane Awaits Record Flooding

FLOODWATERS are expected to surge through 6500 homes and businesses in Brisbane at a level beyond that seen during the catastrophic 1974 floods.

To the west, the city of Ipswich will also face its worst flooding in almost 40 years.

Premier Anna Bligh said last night a C[pounds sterling]frighteningC[yen] situation was developing in both cities, where evacuations are under way ahead of the Brisbane River's expected peak tomorrow.

C[pounds sterling]Ipswich and Brisbane are now facing their greatest threat and their toughest test in more than 35 years,C[yen] Ms Bligh said.

C[pounds sterling]... the current predictions indicate that the river will continue to rise into Thursday (tomorrow) with flood levels expected higher than the 1974 peak,C[yen] she said.

Forecasts indicate the Brisbane River will get beyond the 5.45metres seen in 1974, when at least 6700 homes were partially or totally flooded in the Brisbane metropolitan area. …
