Community Carer

Article excerpt

A YOUNG Teeesside apprentice is proving to be a positive role model for others and helping other young people in his local community.

Nineteen-year-old Kevin Garner started his apprenticeship with Redcar and Cleveland Council last year, working as an apprentice community development worker.

He is seconded to The Kara Family Project, a charitable organisation that offers support, advice and guidance to families in South Bank, Grangetown, Coatham and Dormanstown and parts of East Cleveland.

And Kevin's own personal experiences influenced his career choice.

When he was younger he spent several years in foster care following the death of his father.

Despite the setbacks in his early life, Kevin was determined to turn his experiences into something positive by helping and supporting others.

As part of his role, Kevin works alongside other support workers on projects which benefit children, young people and their families in deprived work communities.

His job includes planning and organising community activities, such as trips and outings and drop in sessions, as well as assisting with volunteering opportunities.

Kevin chose the apprenticeship route after completing a college course and deciding that he wanted to do something that was practical. He said: "I wanted to do something challenging and interesting that involved helping people and the apprenticeship has given me the ideal opportunity to do that.

"I really enjoy getting up and coming to work and being part of the team.

"I'm meeting lots of new people and love seeing the end results and positive impact that projects I've been involved in can have."

Kevin is The Kara Family Project's first apprentice and project manager Sheila Anderson is extremely impressed with the positive contribution he has made to the organisation already. …
