Blondes Drum 2 Drumming Up Musical Performances at the Beaches

Bandmates often share similarities. But Marilyn Wilson and Lynn Curtain, who call themselves Blondes Drum 2, are nearly the same.

The two women are the same age, mothers and grandmothers, and both are married to men named Frank. They both grew up on the west coast of the United States and live in the same neighborhood in Ponte Vedra Beach. And both have a passion for music, specifically drumming.

Their enthusiasm for drumming and their desire to empower other women brought Wilson and Curtain together about two years ago. They formed a women's drum circle "on a lark," Wilson said. Allowing the rhythms to lead their journey, their partnership has evolved from community drumming into workshops, special music events and public performances.

"We've found ourselves going in two different directions," Wilson said. "But both speak to our hearts and mission."

Wilson and Curtain want to bring people together via drumming. They started with twice-a-month drum circles in Jacksonville Beach; that led to performances at senior centers and other special community drumming events at the Beaches. Then they created and facilitated a writing workshop, using inspirational drumming to inspire creative flow.

The workshop was a natural transition for Wilson, a former recruiter and career coach. The workshop was well received by attendees and motivated Curtain to write music again. Early in her career, Curtain worked as a professional musician who toured and did many gigs. She later gave up performing for more traditional employment.

"I hadn't written music for about 20 years," Curtain said. "But I picked up my guitar and my writing has been evolving ever since."

Many of Curtain's songs speak to issues that are important to women, including environmentalism, animal rights empowerment and global unity. …
