WITH hubby and the kids home on summer holidays my household resembles a direct factory outlet store. Right after a busload of frantic deranged shopaholics has ransacked it during a 90 per cent off, big name brand, one-day-only massive clearance.

Shoes, clothes, bodies and empty chip packets scattered everywhere. And that's just the path leading to the front door.

I admit, since school broke up standards around here may have slipped slightly. Okay a lot. Okay they were never that high but who knew they could slip so low so fast?

The a[approximately]we're-all-on-holiday-let's-take-things-easy' mindset starts out innocently enough. First it's a couple more takeaways than usual to give yourself some time off in the kitchen, next the kids' routine bedtime slips off the radar, then you notice the floor doesn't really need so much vacuuming and the dog can do without his weekly bath and, before you know it, you're justifying using the still-to-be-packed-up Christmas tree as a clothes horse and letting the fridge go feral.

The moment I knew I was in full metal jacket holiday mode was the day I walked into a shopping centre wearing my bright fluoro green plastic shoes (some people call them Crocs, some people call them hideous).

These items of footwear are normally only reserved for pottering in the back garden or a lightning visit to the letterbox under cover of darkness. But there I was, on holidays and shameless, not a care in the world wandering around Pacific Fair Centre up on the Goldie as confident as a supermodel strutting the catwalk. …
