SCHOOL'S back early for some local students who have this week returned to the classroom for a head start to the school year.

More than 50 Years Four, Five and Six students from across the Gladstone region are participating in Summer School at two school locations.

Locally, Tannum Sands and Gladstone South State Schools have opened their doors to these students who have been identified as requiring additional help in the areas of literacy and numeracy.

In Central Queensland there are nine Summer Schools operating which are being taught by a registered teacher.

The aim of these Summer Schools is to provide students statewide with the opportunity to improve their literacy and numeracy skills in a unique and fun learning environment.

This time students are learning how to work with measurement such as area, length, mass and capacity and time and how to write persuasively.

Tannum Sands Summer School teacher Kelly Lamont-Devlin said the program allowed participating students to build self esteem and confidence and give them a Cybit extra' to get up and running for the new school year. …
