Rina Joins Growing List of Heroes after Flood; Teen Risks Her Own Life

WITHCOTT'S Rina Heyns is being hailed a hero after her actions at the height of Monday's flash flood disaster.

The 19-year-old works in her father Machiel's store, Stevemic Meats at Withcott, which was directly in the path of the wall of water as it roared through the town.

In an extraordinary tale of bravery, the teen was holding back the store's door to stop the raging water from entering her father's business as the wall of the vacant premises next door gave way.

Floodwaters spewed into the butcher shop her father has spent 14 years building up.

aI was holding the door. Then the wall broke and all the water started coming into dad's business,a Ms Heyns said.

Ms Heyns, realising the vacant shop next door was becoming a dam for rising floodwater, risked her life to save her father's business.

aThe water was already waist deep inside our store and I was smashed against equipment by its force and hurt my back. …
