ALAN PARDEW feels his first taste of the Tyne-Wear derby has been like the build-up to an FA Cup final.

The Toon boss guided West Ham all the way to the Cardiff final of 2006 to face Liverpool and narrowly lost out in a pulsating showpiece - losing on penalties after a 3-3 draw.

Pardew admitted it was by far the biggest derby he had been involved in, despite taking part as a player and manager with Crystal Palace, Charlton and West Ham in the capital.

When asked if he was ready for the big one, Pardew told the Chronicle: "You are not going to know what it is like until you go through something like that, but I have been to cup finals.

I have had play-offs finals, which are probably the nearest thing I can put to it, as it is a bigger derby than I have been involved with in the past.

"Derbies are not so regular here, and the size of the clubs, particularly ours, makes it much bigger than those.

"When you have managed in cup finals and play-off finals they are very similar. …
