A RELAXED Simon Crean flew into Grafton yesterday to see the flood devastation for himself.

The federal Minister for Regional Australia was the third high-profile politician to visit the Valley in the past five days.

What has become known as the Bacon Street asinkholesa was Mr Crean's first stop yesterday.

He arrived with Member for Page Janelle Saffin and Clarence Valley mayor Richie Williamson, and was met by a large number of senior council employees.

Mr Crean said it was important to learn the lessons of this flood to avoid the same impact next time.

aSimply saying we'll put back what was there, the way it was, I think requires some further thought,a he said.

aThat's why being strategic about it and looking forward is important; and how we plan the recovery phase in a way that is sustainable and encourages growth, not continuing threat.a

After leaving Bacon Street, Mr Crean went on to tour Brushgrove and Ulmarra before returning to Grafton for meetings. …
