IN greyhound racing there can be no better feeling than breeding your first litter, rearing them to a racing age, breaking them in and preparing them for a race then scoring a win in their first outing.

This is not quite how it turned out for Queensland trainer Mark Rowe when he ventured to Brisbane late last year having prepared greyhounds Best Yet and Outback Thunder for a first-up assault at Albion Park.

Best Yet was well supported in the market but met with plenty of interference and finished a well-beaten sixth while Outback Thunder fared even worse; falling heavily and breaking his shoulder.

After the disappointment, Rowe opted to turn them both out for a spell.

Fast forward four months to Grafton last Thursday and with the pair set to resume racing in the heats of the Grafton Radio Taxi's Blue Paws series.

Rowe could safely have assumed that the gods were against him with the Queensland floods threatening, roads closed and matters obviously much worse.

Luckily for connections there is a happy ending to this story with Rowe able to make it to the races and both Best Yet and Outback Thunder were successful in their respective heats.

The icing on the cake for Rowe would be if one of his runners takes out the final that will be contested today at the Grafton Greyhound Racing Club.

Best Yet appears to be the obvious selection after clocking the fastest heat time of 23.23 seconds and showing good acceleration soon after box rise.

Outback Thunder produced a huge effort to come from last early to salute in 23.72 seconds and could be a very big improver.

Whichever way it goes, and even if success does not come today for either, rest assured that both of these greyhounds have handy careers ahead of them. …
