MOTORISTS are being warned about the potential danger of driving through floodwaters, not just to personal safety but to your engine's transmission as well.

Automatic transmission repair specialist Ron Hill, from Ron Hill Automatics in Maroochydore, said even low levels of water contamination could occur at low speed.

C[pounds sterling]Without trying to scare motorists, be aware that if you have driven through more than 150 millimetres of water, six inches in the old scale, at anything over 20kmh there is a strong possibility that the transmission has ingested water,C[yen] Mr Hill said.

C[pounds sterling]The problem is there will be no noticeable change in the transmission's performance for low levels of water contamination. Without taking precautions, such as checking the fluid condition, there could be a time bomb in the making.C[yen]

Mr Hill said even a small amount of water would cause rusty bearings, swelling of internal seals, and dissolving of clutch plate materials as they are paper-based. …
