Crossing the World and Drawing on Travel

WHEN it comes to journeys sometimes we need a map while other times we draw our own way as we travel along familiar and new paths.

And this year Crossroad Arts will draw a map halfway around the world.

This year will be an exciting year for the Crossroad Arts team and the artistic director/CEO Steve Mayer-Miller who have titled their 2011 program Tidal Crossings.

Mr Mayer-Miller said the program was built around the idea of mapping, both as a metaphor for crossing social and cultural borders and maps as pieces of art.

He said they were running several programs with different community groups throughout Mackay, northern Queensland, Capella and extending it to India and Canada.

Mr Mayer-Miller will be working in Ahmedabad, India for three months where he will be an artist in residence at Darpana performing arts academy.

C[pounds sterling]I guess we are mapping half the world this year.

C[pounds sterling]It's a mapping project and it would probably be our most ambitious project in 15 years.C[yen]

Joining him on his tidal crossings will be local artists Traci Lietzke and Tracey Heathwood who will be working with Crossroad Arts this year.

C[pounds sterling]When we look at maps, there is this idea of geographically representation, or the marks we put down, which we come to eventually figure out.

C[pounds sterling]There is an instinct, of putting marks down to figure out where you have been.

C[pounds sterling]We ask three fundamental questions of where have we been, where are we now and where are we going?

C[pounds sterling]They are intense questions but they are fundamental and we ask them all the time,C[yen] he said.

Mr Mayer-Miller said there would be several collaborations when he was in India with the project back here in Mackay. …
