THERE are concerns building supplies will be more expensive and harder to source in Mackay when flood-ravaged communities begin to rebuild homes and businesses.

Mackay Chamber of Commerce chairperson Kylie Porter said certain building supplies were harder to get after the 2008 Mackay floods and she expects a similar situation following unprecedented flooding in Queensland.

C[pounds sterling]Hardware and building supplies are going to be at a premium, especially timber and plasterboard products, but I expect manufacturers will increase production to cope with demand, which is what happened during the flood event in 2008,C[yen] she said.

C[pounds sterling]I think it is safe to say that we can expect perhaps slower delivery of some items, which are particularly rebuilding sensitive, such as plasterboard and some timber products, which are manufactured in south-east Queensland.C[yen]

Mackay hardware store Porters has been busy preparing for anticipated shortages, stocking up on supplies of certain items to ensure it can meet the demands of its customers. …
