Article excerpt

GOLF: Caloundra's Sarah-Jane Smith has made a tidy start to her season, sitting in a share of second place after the opening day of the NSW Women's Open.

She fired a four-under round of 68 to be one shot behind leader Caroline Hedwall, of Sweden, at Oatlands Golf Club in Sydney.

Smith, 26, (pictured) moved into a share of the lead with a birdie on the 15th but stumbled soon after with a bogey on the 17th.

The highlight of her day came when she eagled the 380m par-five fourth.

She sits equal with New Zealand pair Caroline Bon and 13-year-old Lydia Ko and Denmark's Mianne Bagger.

Fellow Sunshine Coast golfers Katherine Hull and Sarah Kemp also made strong starts, sitting four shots off the pace at one-under and tied for 13th.

World No.19 Hull eagled the fourth but followed with a bogey on the fifth.
