STEVE Bruce has warned he will not be bullied into paying over the odds for a striker, writes STUART RAYNER.

Inter Milan midfielder Sulley Muntari could complete a move to Wearside tomorrow, but the search for Darren Bent's replacement has so far frustrated Bruce.

Rumours on Saturday morning that Ricardo Fuller had joined were proven wrong when he lined up for Stoke City. Cardiff City's Jay Bothroyd is another target, with Bruce claiming to be in talks with "around ten clubs".

But after stand-in striker Kieran Richardson scored twice in Sunderland's 2-1 win over Blackpool, he was at pains to stress he is not as desperate for another centre-forward as some seem to think.

"At the moment everyone is thinking they will have us over," he said. "We only have six games between now and April. We have eight in April and May. By that time we should have (Danny) Welbeck back, (Fraizer) Campbell, (Michael) Turner and (John) Mensah back and (Lee) Cattermole. The need is not that great, but of course if we can get the right type who will add to the squad we will try to do it. "Niall (Quinn, Sunderland's chairman) has been extremely busy in the last week. We must have five or six irons in the fire, let's see if something develops over the next couple of days." Centre-back Mensah looks like being the first back in action, having been an unused substitute at Bloomfield Road. Influenced by his wife Menaye Donkor, winner of the improbablytitled 2004 Miss Universe (Ghana), former Portsmouth midfielder Muntari had hoped for a move to London. But with rumoured interest from Tottenham Hotspur - plus Liverpool and Everton - not materialising, he appears to be softening towards the North East. …
