IT is an unimaginable situation no loving parent should have to endure.

But instead of watching her son blowing out the candles on his 21st birthday, grieving mum Jean Harrington is still mourning his tragic death.

Christopher and his friend Kieran Kenny, 19, were found hanged in woods in Cramlington last July.

And today Jean, with the rest of her family and Christopher's devastated girlfriend, Mel Hurley, will hold a party for Christopher for what should have been the happiest of milestones.

Jean will be going to a restaurant with her daughters Lynsey, 34, Samantha, 33, and Charlotte, 24, grandchildren Katlyn, five, and Stephen, two, with Mel, 19, to raise a glass to her son.

They say they will look back on the happy memories and reflect on the good times.

Fighting back tears, Jean, 54, said: "It devastated all of us. He should be with us today. I think it is just a case of Christopher being depressed and he hid it well. I think a lot of young boys can't open up and talk about their troubles. I think girls can, but boys find it difficult to show their feelings and Christopher suffered from that.

"We are going to either Pizza Hut or Frankie and Benny's to have a meal. We will celebrate Christopher's 21st birthday and will raise a glass to him in is memory. We have so many good memories and we will reflect on those. "I miss everything about him. He is my only son and he was very special - he's still very special."

Christopher's girlfriend Mel is trying to come to terms with his death.

Jean, of Byker, Newcastle, said: "Mel will be there. She visits us a lot and we talk about Christopher. She is very loyal to him." Christopher left seven letters on the kitchen table before he died - one each to his mother and father and five more to friends and other members of the family. …
