WORLD No.1 Caroline Wozniacki needed painkillers to survive against tennis' bionic woman as she booked an Australian Open semi-final berth.

The Danish star was forced to play catch-up tennis before overhauling Italian Francesca Schiavone to win 3-6 6-3 6-3.

Schiavone showed no sign of wear and tear after the 30-year-old took 4 hours 44 minutes Co the longest match in women's grand slam history Co to beat Svetlana Kuznetsova in the last round.

In fact, it was Wozniacki who was feeling the pain yesterday, taking a time out in the first set to have her left thigh tightly strapped.

C[pounds sterling]I felt it when I was serving and I fell down on my leg. I wanted to tape it up because I've had something similar before, so I knew that if I tape it up it will be okay.

C[pounds sterling]First the tape was too restricting and too tight. I got some painkillers that helped me and after 15, 20 minutes I didn't feel it. So then it was okay.C[yen]

Schiavone shrugged off her previous long-haul clash to jump Wozniacki, grabbing the first set then racing to a 3-1 lead with a service break in the second.

The Dane fought back to level the match and while the third set started in a flurry of service breaks, it took Wozniacki four match points to eventually seal a spot in the next round.
